October's Newsletter Hi: This is taken from the handbook Peggy Bush gives to all the rescuers. We need to cite the author, who is Carol Buchanan. She wrote the article, which appeared in the Rocky Mountain News on June 18, 1992.
Between 13 and 15 million dogs and cats are turned into U.S. animal shelters every year. Of these at least 8 million are destroyed because there simply are not enough homes for them all. Eight million! That's one destroyed every 1.5 seconds. That's three or four destroyed by the time you finish this sentence.
Through no fault of their own, these warm, loving animals will never be loved and cared for as they deserve. They are the victims of an appalling overabundance of dogs and cats caused by human carelessness and irresponsible breeding.
The solution? Be a responsible pet owner. Your dog or cat is not a disposable object to be tossed away when he grows up or you grow tired of him. He can live 10, 15, or even 20 years. That's a lengthy commitment not to be taken lightly.
Each day in every shelter in the country, countless animals are put to death for the crime of being born.
Please, be a part of the solution to the tragedy of pet overpopulation. Prevent a litter-spay or neuter your pets.
Carol Buchanan, Broomfield, Colorado
Since this was written, a number of no-kill shelters have been created in the United States. These shelters continue to need volunteers, contributions of money and equipment, and qualified adoptive families. Please see the list of rescue links and shelters and get to know the ones in your area. You will be glad you did.
